# Dynamic Watermarking

Dynamic watermarking adds personalized, viewer-specific text overlays to every
page of a shared document or data room. Unlike a static watermark baked into a
file, Papermark renders the watermark per view, in real time, so each recipient
sees their own identifying information — and any leaked screenshot, download, or
printout traces back to the exact person and session it came from.

## Dynamic variables

The watermark is composed from variables resolved per viewer, per session:

- **Email** of the viewer
- **Name** of the viewer
- **IP address**
- **Date** of access
- **Time** of access

Because these are resolved at view time (not embedded when the file is uploaded),
the same document shows different watermarks to different viewers.

## Configuration

The watermark's appearance is fully configurable so it protects the content
without making it unreadable:

- **Tiling** — repeat the watermark across the whole page or place it once.
- **Position** — where the watermark sits on the page.
- **Rotation** — angle of the text.
- **Font size**
- **Color**
- **Opacity** — how visible vs. subtle the overlay is.

## How it works

1. You enable watermarking on a document or data room link and set the variables and style.
2. On every view, Papermark composes the watermark from the current viewer's session and renders it over each page.
3. The overlay is tied to the session, so it cannot be stripped by saving or re-sharing the file.

Watermarking pairs with [screenshot protection](https://www.papermark.com/screenshot-protection.md),
download restrictions, NDA gating, and granular permissions for layered defense.

## What it protects against

- **Leaks and forwarding** — a screenshot or printout is attributable to the viewer who leaked it.
- **Unauthorized sharing** — recipients know their identity is on every page, which is a strong deterrent.
- **Compliance** — provides an audit-ready trail of who accessed what and when.

## Use cases

Confidential M&A and fundraising materials, due-diligence data rooms, board and
investor documents, legal and IP files — anywhere a document leaving the intended
audience carries real risk.
