# Password Protection

Password protection lets you require a password before anyone can open a shared
document or data room, adding a simple, strong gate on confidential material. You
can set a **unique password per file or per data room**, so different recipients
get different credentials.

## Capabilities

- **Unique password per link** — set a distinct password for each document or data room.
- **Change or revoke passwords** at any time, instantly cutting off access.
- **Access tracking** — monitor access attempts and successful entries.
- **Access notifications** — get alerted when someone opens a protected file.

## Combine with other controls

Password protection layers with the rest of Papermark's link settings for
stronger security:

- **Email verification** — confirm the viewer's identity before access.

## How it works

1. Add a password when you create or edit a document or data room link.
2. Recipients must enter the password (and optionally verify their email) to view.
3. Revoke or rotate the password at any time — the old one stops working immediately.
